Mindful Mondays: Blue Monday

Back in the day if someone said to me Blue Monday, I’d say yes please and jump at the chance of a discounted meal courtesy of Yo Sushi, however I’m guessing that today on January 15th it’s a completely different type of Blue Monday.

After some Googling I’ve discovered that today is meant to be the most depressing day of the year! Obviously this is just some random made up theory and I don’t think anyone should go along with it or give it any attention. Who knows how it started, more likely than not someone was probably not having a good day a few weeks after the Christmas break and in to the new year, they may have voiced their opinion via social media and viola it became a day to be either celebrated or commiserated in the calendar.

It’s only Blue Monday if you believe it to be but you can flip it and make it Yellow Monday if you like so that it’s all sunshine and roses. Today can be whatever you want it to be, you don’t have to fall for the hype and go along with what other people have made up.

I for one am not going to be dragged down in to believing today is meant to be an unhappy day. It’s the start of a new year, there are still three hundred and fifty days to make our dreams come true in the most happy and positive of ways. If you have fallen in to the marketing trap of believing the negative vibes of this glorious third Monday of the year then, you need to snap out of it quick time and take care of your mental health.

Start by making a gratitude list of all the things you are grateful for in this year alone (you have fifteen days to look back on), then do some form of exercise to give your mind a boost of energy (a power walk in the park or a gym session), then cook yourself some delicious homemade food (fresh vegetables, homemade pie or even a roast dinner on a Monday – yes very controversial), followed by getting out in to the big wide world to engage with other human beings and nature.

See, there’s so much to be happy about today!
